Situated near San Rafael on the San Antonio road, Amnesia is another one
of Ibiza’s super clubs. The venue is steeped in history and is the
popular residence of many of the world’s clubbing giants. Originally the
home of five generations of the Planells family, who eventually sold
their country house and moved into town in April1970, it became a place
for hippie bands to play and for others to indulge in hippie culture.
In May 1976, Antonio Escohotado, a young philosopher from Madrid signed
a lease with the view to opening the venue as a discotheque; his belief
was that people needed an escape from their humdrum lives and with that
in mind provisionally decided upon the name ‘The Workshop Of
Forgetfulness’. Luckily for us, he changed his mind soon after and opted
for Amnesia.
It was in the 80s that Amnesia began to take the shape that we know and
love today; freestyle mixing took pride of place and house music became
the language of groundbreaking clubs around the world. It was at this
time that legends such as Alfredo came to the fore, guiding Ibiza
through the next few of decades and facilitating the evolution that has
seen the island become one of the most important clubbing destinations
on the planet. The terrace was originally open air but due to complaints
from nearby neighbours the open-air dancefloor had to be covered. The
Terrace, however, remains one of those unique Ibiza spaces where
anything can and usually does happen.
With two rooms that produce an equally magnificent atmosphere, its no
wonder Amnesia remains one of the most influential of the Ibiza clubs.
Home to long term residents Cocoon and Cream, it’s also the place to
find Together, Music On and the recently announced Elrow. The Saturday
night will play host to the Spanish clubbing giant that has become one
of the most colourful parties on the clubbing capital in recent years. .
